‘Absurd is that which is devoid of purpose […] Cut off from his religious, metaphysical, and transcendental roots, man is lost; all his actions become senseless, absurd, useless.’

—Martin Esslin, The Theatre of the Absurd

On a park bench while sketching

  • Little Boy: What song is that?
  • Me: The Book of Love by the Magnetic Fields.
  • Little Boy: I like it.
  • Me: Do you?
  • Little Boy: A bit. (After awhile) But it's very sad.
  • Me: Yes it is. Is that why you don't like it a lot?
  • Little Boy: Yeah. It's too sad... Do you like it?
  • Me: I do.
  • Little Boy: A lot?
  • Me: You could say that.
  • Little Boy: Why do you like sad things?
  • Me: You know, I actually don't know.
  • Little Boy: You must be very sad. (When I don't answer) Don't be sad. I like your drawing. More than the song.

Lonely and Tired

But I guess that’s how I’m going to feel for the rest of my life.

Getting there. In every sense of the word.
